- Description:
- As part of an ongoing research program to prepare new substituted fulvenes, benzofulvenes and cyclopentadienes for use as NLO chromophores and starting materials for organometallic synthesis, bis-co,co-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofulvene, and 6-(3,5-dimethyI-2-hydroxyphenyl)fulvene have been prepared in good yield. Bis-co,co-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofulvene was prepared in 90 % yield by the base catalyzed condensation of 4.4'-dimethoxybenzophenone with indene. 6-(3,5-Dimethyl-2-hvdroxyphenvl)fulvene was prepared in 83 % yield by the base catalyzed condensation of 3.5- dimethylsalicylaldehyde with cyclopentadiene. A high yield, one pot synthesis, of 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azo-3-heptene-2-one (AMAHO) has been developed by the carefully controlled condensation of acetyiacetone with ethylenediamine. AMAHO once prepared was utilized to prepare 5 new unsymmetrical bis-Schiff base ligands: l-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5-diazo-6-methylnono-1.6- diene-8-one, l-(2'-hydroxy-3.5-dibromophenyl)-2.5-diazo-6-methylnono-l,6-diene-8-one, l-(3'-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5-diazo-6-methylnono-l,6-diene-8-one, l-(2'-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl) -2,5-diazo-6-methylnono-l,6-diene-8-one, and 1-(2'-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylphenyl) -2,5-diazo-6-methylnono-l,6-diene-8-one in good yields.
