- Description:
- The purpose of this investigation was to analyze and determine which programs currently being utilized at North Springs High School (NSHS) actually produced an improvement in student achievement, attendance, and decrease in the number of discipline referrals, and engagement as indicated on the High School Student Engagement Survey. This dissertation was concerned with student success as reflected in the areas of achievement, attendance, discipline, and student engagement. This study examined four selected programs currently being implemented at NSHS to determine the extent of these programs' impact on student achievement, attendance, discipline, and engagement. Data collection determined the best of these programs that addressed student success in school. The programs examined during this study were: Jobs for Georgia Graduates (JAG), Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), Learn and Serve (SL for Service Learning), and Scholastic Assessment Test Preparation Course (SAT). The findings of this research study were that students in the SL program increased their GPAs and showed a decrease in the number of discipline referrals. All students with and without discipline problems attendance continued to be poor in all programs. Students agreed that the selected programs helped their perceptions, provided benefits for them, and helped them with completing assignments. Under the variable of students completing assignments, however, students were equally divided in their opinions. The conclusions drawn from the findings in this study were that SL and SAT programs can positively impact student achievement as evidenced in grade point averages and students' participation showed a decrease in discipline referrals. Attendance is a concern that should be addressed in future studies. It is recommended that administrators and teachers re-examine and evaluate the cost effectiveness of programs to determine the impact on expanding in order to improve student achievement, attendance, and discipline before expanding the selected programs across curriculum in ninth and tenth grades. Currently, there is little research about the selected programs on the high school level. Future research is needed on the impact of service learning programs in high schools and its impact on these variables.
