- Description:
- In 1948, the City of Atlanta hired eight black policemen to patrol the black community. This study examines the hiring of black policemen to determine why they were needed and if the "Negro Police Experiment" was successful. In essence, the study is based on the premise that black policemen did reduce crime, improve race relations, and reduced the occurrences of police brutality. The methodology used in gathering background information on Atlanta and its police force was the historical research and personal interview approaches. The interviews were very helpful in supplementing the historical data, and in some cases, served as a primary source of firsthand accounts on the black police experience. The thesis research discloses information to support the major premise that black policemen were effective tools in addressing crime concerns in the black community. Their hiring was also a progressive step that contributed to the racial integration of city government and the criminal justice system.
