- Description:
- This study examined the association between child sexual abuse, socioeconomic status, self-esteem and teenage pregnancy. A convenience sampling technique was utilized to obtain the closest and most available population sample. The sample size was 30, comprising 15 pregnant and 15 non pregnant teenagers between ages 16 and 22. The pregnant teenagers were drawn from Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services, South Fulton Area Office, Atlanta, Georgia. The non-pregnant teenagers were drawn from New Life International Family Church, Atlanta, Georgia. The study design is posttest only non-experimental group design. The data for this study were collected through questionnaires administered by the researcher, after obtaining the participants informed consents. Chi-square result indicated a statistically significant difference in the rate of child sexual abuse among pregnant and non-pregnant teenagers. The result of the Independent Samples T test indicated a statistically significant difference in the socioeconomic status, and self-esteem levels of these two groups. Kendall's tau result revealed a negative correlation between socioeconomic status and self-esteem. This study is however, subject to some limitations including the non-probability sampling method utilized, and small sample size. The findings of this study will assist social workers and other clinicians in developing teenage pregnancy prevention programs. Social workers will become more knowledgeable about the role played by child sexual abuse, socioeconomic status, and self-esteem in relation to teenage pregnancy. This will enable them to plan more appropriate and effective interventions.
