- Marriage patterns among African Americans have changed drastically over the past three decades. The decline of marriage among African Americans currently is occurring at a rapid speed. Research on the decline in marriage among African Americans has focused mostly on economic factors. This study assessed the association between parental education, religiosity, and perception of mate availability have on perceptions of marriage among African American male college students. Four theoretical perspectives were used for analysis and interpretation of results. The results indicated that various socio-economic factors must be included in the discussion of marriage among African American men.
