- Description:
- The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family support and the self-esteem of gay African American males living in the Atlanta area. Survey research was conducted at AID Atlanta, a community AIDS service organization that provides numerous services for persons living with HIV/AIDS. The study surveyed fifty African American males from under the age of twenty to over the age of fifty, who identified themselves as gay and HIV positive. Twenty-eight percent of the respondents identified themselves as college graduates while twenty percent identified their education level as less than high school. The dependent variables were cross-tabulated with the independent variables to determine if a significant statistical relationship existed. It was determined that the higher the income, the higher the self-esteem and the lower the family support. In conclusion, the results revealed there was no significant statistical relationship between family support and self-esteem of gay African American males living with HIV/AIDS in the Atlanta area.
