- Description:
- This study of the African goddesses is a research tool to be used in future studies. Due to the overwhelming neglect of the powerful African female characters in creation stories and mythology (excluding Egypt), this study was designed to make their presence known. Through an extensive review of journals in the fields of sociology, anthropology, theology, history, and folklore, as well as other published research on African creation myths, I documented the known presence of 338 African goddesses (excluding Egypt). I then categorized them into 32 different types in reference to their characteristics and associations within their respective cultures. I have also provided several suggestions for further study while promoting the use of feminist research and a pluralistic approach.
