- Description:
- This study sought to identify the career ascendancy patterns of principals currently employed in Georgia in order to assist other aspirants to obtain administrative positions. The dependent variables were career ascendancy patterns of male and female principals. The independent variables were (1) personal goals, (2) professional activities, (3) social/interpersonal skills, (4) local school/systemwide activities, (5) knowledge, (6) politics, (7) teacher/administrative experience, (8) internship/ mentoring, (9) interviewing skills, (10) educational level, (11) age, and (12) administrative recognition. To obtain data, a questionnaire was developed and field tested by the researcher. The questionnaire was mailed to 128 principals in five city school systems and five county school systems in northern Georgia. All 128 principals responded to the questionnaire. Answers to 12 research questions were sought. Three of the 12 hypotheses tested in this study were found to have significant differences after applying the test. The findings revealed that participation in professional, school, and systemwide activities and having social and interpersonal skills seem to have an influence on ascendancy to the principalship, especially for females. Several conclusions were drawn and recommendations made based on the findings of this study. Included among the recommendations are women must be visible and colleges and universities should incorporate school politics in their administrative classes.
