- Description:
- High school dropout rates are at epidemic proportions. Researchers feel this steady increase will have a profound impact on this nation by the year 2000. The crime rate and youth mortality is at an all time high. There are many myths and misnomers about high school dropouts. This research study will help researchers develop new and innovative ways of tracking and resolving the problems of high school dropouts as well as specifically define the term dropout. The data collection method involved tracking high school students' attendance from annual attendance lists. This study concerned gender differences in high school dropouts. This study found that there exists a statistically significant difference in dropout rates between genders. Because this difference exists, a proposal was made that there should also exist a difference in interventions. The development and socialization of males and females are different and this may explain why the dropout rates are different. Not only does this study overtly address differences in dropout rates between genders, but it also presents, covertly, a varied way of assessing the differences that exist between races and ethnicities. This study may be expanded and targeted to include inner-city, suburban, and rural populations.
