- Description:
- This study examined the differential occupational structures among immigrants and the U. S. population. The major sources of data utilized in the study were the 1990 census and 1991 statistics on immigrants. The study was based on the American perception that immigrants take jobs away from Americans and that a major immigration reform is necessary. Specifically, the study posed two hypotheses: (1) the occupational structure among the immigrant population is different from that of the U.S. population, and (2) there is a significant displacement effect by the immigrant population on the employment level of the U.S. population. The data analysis rendered support to hypothesis 1 but not to hypothesis 2. Therefore, the study concludes that the occupational structures among the immigrant population are significantly different from that of the U.S. population. In other words, the immigrant population predominantly occupies agricultural-related jobs and non- managerial occupational categories, unlike their U.S. population counterparts. Thus, there is no significant displacement affect between the two population segments.
