- Description:
- This study examined exposure to community violence and the reporting of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among adolescents. The study was based on the premise that there was a link between exposure to community violence and PTSD symptoms. The convenience sample consisted of 41 low-income youth between the ages of 11 and 15 years old. It was hypothesized that there was a statistically significant relationship between violence exposure and reporting PTSD symptoms. The researcher examined exposure to violence as a victim and as a witness and discovered both were significantly related to reporting PTSD symptoms. Also of interest to the researcher was the PTSD diagnostic criteria. Fifteen percent met all three symptom criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD. The findings revealed a relatively high degree of exposure to violence among this convenient sample. Being victims and witnesses to violence in the community were strongly associated to PTSD symtpmotology.
