- Description:
- This study was conducted using a single system research design to examine the frequency of intrusive thought and avoidance reactions in veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder. Gestalt Therapy was used as the intervention. One veteran, receiving treatment at the Atlanta Vet Center, was used in this study. The Impact of Events Scale (IBS) was used to measure the dependent variable, stress, and the independent variables, intrusive thoughts and avoidance reactions. The treatment hypothesis states that the frequency of posttraumatic symptoms, namely intrusive thoughts and avoidance reactions could be reduced by the use of Gestalt Therapy. The results showed a decrease in the number of intrusive thoughts and avoidance reactions over the duration of the treatment and follow up showed continued improvement.
