- This exploratory descriptive study assessed the relationship regarding illness attitude and the level of awareness and knowledge of breast cancer screening found between African American women: young and elderly. The study identified the factors that attributed to the lack of knowledge that African American women have in regards to breast cancer screening and explained how illness attitude relates to African American women having access to healthcare, utilization and the importance of prevention. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data at Clark Atlanta University School of Social Work and Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Plaquemine, Louisiana. There were thirty-nine (39) African American women who agreed to participate in the survey. Simple descriptive statistics and T-test were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that there is no significant difference between African American women, young and elderly, regarding knowledge and illness attitude of breast cancer screening.
