- Description:
- This study had the purpose of measuring a hypothesized relationship between the level of incentive toward self- sufficiency of single mothers that receive public assistance benefits and the length of time they had received those benefits. The sample for this study consisted of thirty-six respondents who received public assistance benefits and resided in either Gwinnett County or Dekalb County, Georgia. An original instrument consisting of fifty-four questions was self-administered in a one-shot episode. The results were analyzed utilizing frequency distributions, means, standard deviations and Pearson's 'r' Correlation Coefficient. The findings of the study revealed: 1) That the respondents have a high level of incentive to get off welfare and that getting off welfare is very appealing to them. 2) The respondents require either educational or employment services or resources to achieve self-sufficiency. 3) That no statistical correlation exists between the respondents level of incentive to get off public assistance and the length of time that they have been receiving benefits.
