- Description:
- The purpose of this study was to determine if there is an association between maternal parenting behaviors and juvenile delinquency as perceived by incarcerated male juvenile delinquents. An instrument designed specifically for this study, The Juvenile Perceptions Instrument, was utilized to survey male juvenile delinquents with family profiles considered as high-risk for producing juveniles with delinquent behavior. Seventy-five juveniles from two youth correctional facilities in Atlanta, Georgia and Montgomery, Alabama, provided the sample for this study. The responses from the 134 respondents were analyzed utilizing frequency distributions, means, and standard deviations. The findings of the study revealed that there was no relationship between the perceptions of specific maternal behaviors and the delinquent behavior of male juveniles. The responses overwhelmingly indicated that the male juveniles perceive their mothers as practicing positive parenting behavior in terms of discipline, supervision, values, quality time, school involvement, affection, and safety of the home environment. The juveniles did not associate their mother's parenting behaviors with their delinquency problems.
