- Description:
- This study examined the use of social and psycho- educational techniques to improve self-esteem with a pre-adolescent female who was identified by teachers and administrators as developmentally and socially delayed. The test instrument was the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES). The ten(10) item instrument required the subject to report feelings about himself/herself. The subject participated in a six session intervention, which included the component of enrollment in an all-female social activity which served as substainment for the subject after the intervention ended. During the initial conference, demographic information was collected as well as the interest of the child. This information was used to tailor the intervention to the specific needs and goals of the child. During the intervention the client was given positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior and encouragement for her achievements. Reinforcement and encouragement were delivered in the form of incentives, gifts, approval, praise, affection, and shared affirmations between the social worker and the subject. Results demonstrated an increase in the subjects Self- Esteem. Thus participation in the social and psycho-educational intervention had a positive effect on Self-Esteem.
