- Description:
- This study examined the political history of coalitions between the AFL-CIO and the African American community. The focus of the study was the AFL-CIO Southern Area Civil Rights Department's choice of coalition partners during the Civil Rights Movement (CRM). The researcher used a multi-disciplinary approach that included historical analysis, conflict theory analysis, and coalition models. Analysis of CRM coalitions involved five separate situations and five civil rights organizations. Six independent, and two dependent variables were considered. Research was based on the premises that, (1) the AFL-CIO would select allies based on self-interest and pass coalition experiences, and (2) the AFL-CIO would maintain coalitions with previous partners. The researcher found that, (1) before the Civil Rights Movement the politics of race relations dominated the AFL-CIO's coalition behavior. And, (2) during the Civil Rights Movement, while self-interest was a constant factor, changes in the immediate political environment made old allies expendable. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that an analysis of political coalitions include self-interest, pass coalition behavior, and the constant changes in the immediate political environment.
