- Description:
- A Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis using temperature programmed decomposition (TPDE) was carried out on iron and molybdenum complexes that were impregnated on partially dehydroxylated y-alumina. Cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl dimer, di-p- carbonyl-cis-(l-5-T|: 1 ' -5 ' -T| ' -dicy clopentadienyldimethylsilane)bis(carbonyl- diiron)(FeFe), a mixture of cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl dimer and di-p- carbonyl-cis-( 1 -5-ri: 1 ' -5 ' -T| ' -dicyclopentadienyldimethylsilane)bis(carbonyl- diiron)(FeFe), cyclopentadienyldicarbonyliodoiron (II), cyclopentadienyl- dicarbonyl-2,4-cyclopentadienyliron, and [a,a' -m-xylenebis(r|5-cyclopenta- dienyl)]bis[tricarbonylmolybdenum], were impregnated on partially dehydroxylated y-alumina. Assuming four OH' groups per binding site and 4.4 x 1020 of these sites /m2, samples of approximately 1/20, 1/10, 2/10, 3/10, and 4/10 coverage were analyzed using DRIFTS and TPDE. The samples of 1/20 and 1/10 coverage were too dilute to obtain any useful information in the region of interest 1700-2200 cm'1. DRIFTS analysis indicated that the pure compounds of cyclopenta- dienyliron dicarbonyl dimer formed a trimer; an equilibrium reaction occurred between the bridged and unbridged species of di-p.-carbonyl-cis-( 1 -5-r|: 1' -5 ' - rj'-dicyclopentadienyldimethylsilane)bis(carbonyldiiron)(FeFe); the mixture of cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl dimer and di-p.-carbonyl-cis-( 1 -5-T|: V-5 '-T| dicyclopentadienyldimethylsilane)bis(carbonyldiiron)(FeFe) formed a tetramer; cyclopentadienyldicarbonyliodoiron (II) melted; and [a,a'-m-xylenebis(T|5- cyclopentadienyl)]bis[tricarbonylmolybdenum polymerized. When placed on alumina a reaction occurred with cyclopentadienyldicarbonyl-2,4-cyclopenta- dienyliron that resulted in the formation of a ferrocene compound. The data also indicated that on partially dehydroxylated y-alumina Lewis acid binding occurred and was identified for each compound. In addition, when the compound was placed on alumina decarbonylation occurred more readily than for the pure compound.
