- Description:
- This study examines the social and environmental influences on knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of African American adolescents at risk for HIV infection. Focus group interviews were conducted with adolescents 12-15 years of age. All were members of the Atlanta University Center neighborhood. Results of the focus group revealed that the adolescents felt they were susceptible to HIV/AIDS, but did not take the proper precautionary actions. Findings of this research suggest that more immediate concerns (e.g., immediate sexual gratification, sex in exchange for favors) took precedence over the threat of HIV infection.
