- Description:
- The objective of this study is to assess the nature and extent of unnecessary physical force, if any, used by Atlanta Police officers in two selected black communities of southwest Atlanta: one lower class community and one middle class community. A survey interview was administered to 200 residents in the two communities utilizing a convenient sample method; i.e. 100 respondents from each community. Specifically, the study attempted to answer three research questions: 1) how the lower and middle class communities define unnecessary physical force? 2) whether or not unnecessary physical force exists in the communities? and 3) the frequency of unnecessary physical force. Findings of the study are: 1) lower and middle class blacks have a similar perception of unnecessary physical force; 2) more lower class blacks have been subjected to unnecessary physical force and; 3) unnecessary physical force occurs more often in the lower class community.
