- Description:
- The problem of men battering women is age old, but has only recently come to light due to the women's movement. Much of this new found attention has been focused on the victims of this violence, i.e., the women and their children, but it's becoming very apparent that before the plight of women can really be improved preventive and treatment measures must be utilized with the perpetrators, or the batterers. In the present study, the self-esteem and attitudes towards battering of five male batterers was assessed pre and post their participation in a group for batterers. The intervention with these men was psychoeducational in nature and consisted of assertiveness training, confrontation and anger management, time-outs, cognitive restructuring, and role-playing. In comparing pre and post test results no significant difference was found in either their attitudes towards battering or their level of self-esteem.
