- Description:
- The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of significant differences among high-attendance (HAG), normal-attendance (NAG), and low-attendance (LAG) groups in their perception of job satisfaction as measured on the investigator-developed Job Evaluation Index. The study also investigated teachers' perceptions using certain demographic criteria, namely, age, sex, race, marital status, years of experience, employment status of mate, and number of children. Using correlation, t-test, ANOVA, Reliability, and Multiple Classification Analysis of the SPSS Statistical Software Package, the researcher examined relationships based on 154 respondents of high school teachers belonging to the HAG, NAG, and LAG. Major findings indicated that the three groups did not differ significantly on demographic variables. Of the twelve null hypotheses, only one was rejected. The HAG and LAG differed significantly on the salary/pay variable. Otherwise, the groups showed no significant difference on job attitudes indicating satisfaction on all other variables. 79 strong pair-wise correlations exist among Supervision, Recognition, Achievement, Responsibility, Advancement, Conditions, Salary, Status, Relationships, Satisfiers (Herzberg's), and Dissatisfiers (Herzberg's). Investigator established propositional statements towards a mathematical approach to teacher absenteeism. Researcher created terms such as Idle Teacher Equivalency and Equivalent Variables. Findings do not support two distinct continuums per Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory. The results hold significant implications for school and system management of teacher absenteeism and in the management of school personnel. What makes this study so unique in its findings is that, in a highly desirable school district, all groups indicated dissatisfaction with income, dispelling the notions that teachers are concerned basically with intrinsic rather than extrinsic rewards.
