- Historically, the Black Church in America has played a major role in influencing potential movements. Today it constitutes an important religious institution in the struggle for civil equality in America. The Black church as a social institution and a formal organization has levied power relations that have influenced various socio-political arenas. Inportant among these are organizational structures such as institutions and bureaucracies of major American cities headed by predominately Black administrations. This analysis seeks to show that the impact of the Black church on one such city, Atlanta, Georgia, it is perceived to be quite strong especially as related to the "brokering of power" within the Black ccrrmunity according to interviews with 22 Black Leaders.
