Description:: The objective of this study is to provide a description of the knowledge and usage of condoms, awareness of AIDS, and sexual practices of African-American women utilizing the services of an urban family planning clinic. To attain this objective, the researcher conducted a descriptive study which addressed the aforementioned variables. A self-administered questionnaire was given to 120 of the female clients of the downtown center of the Planned Parenthood of the Atlanta Area. In addition, an in-person interview was conducted with 20 of the 120 women. Particular emphasis was placed on the 95 African-American participants in the data analysis and interpretation. The results revealed that African-American women in this study do not have a high level of knowledge about proper condom usage. While AIDS awareness is high among this group of women, they are not using condoms every time they have sex because they believe themselves to be in mutually monogamous relationships and because of the lack of availability of condoms. Most of the respondents avoided high risk sexual practices, i.e., multiple sex partners and anal and oral sex. Additionally, most respondents had contracted at least one sexually transmitted disease, yet tended to use only the Pill, as opposed to condoms, as their source of contraception.
