- Description:
- This study examined: (1) The patterns of drug use among institutionalized black and white male delinquents aged 12 through 17 years from YDC of Georgia; (2) drug-user types; and (3) differentials in the socialization process between black and white delinquent youth. The data required for this study were collected using a structured questionnaire from 297 black and 140 white male delinquents aged 12 through 17 years. The study sample was drawn from three Youth Development Centers (YDCS). The study findings include: (1) that there is an identifiable similar pattern of drug-use among institutionalized black and white delinquents; (2) that the white and black patterns of drug-use in terms of onset, frequency of the use, and progression will approximate the stages identified by Thomas (1990); and, (3) that the personal characteristics of the white and black vary significantly. This is the first comparative study conducted on institutionalized black and white delinquents. This data base serves as the benchmark for future studies of this nature.
