- Description:
- An examination of 1he post- Reconstruction political and social climate of Georgia's upper Piedmont region during the time period from 1880 to 1915. The study examines various developments that affected the region as a whole and tile black population in particular. These include the roles played by the various political movements that existed at the time, like the Populist and Farmers Alliance movements; and the subsequent wave of reaction that came about in the early part of this century, focusing on the mass expulsion of almost the entire black population of Forsyth County in 1911. The crop lien system, convict-leasing and sharecropping are examined as the main institutions which contributed to the oppressive nature of the period, as well as the emergence of certain powerful individuals who controlled the mines, newspapers, plantations, convict leasing contracts and most government functions.
