- Description:
- In 1829 the distribution of thousands of David Walker's Appeal, a militant anti-slavery pamphlet, written by a black abolitionist, caused much consternation in many American slave states. This thesis is a descriptive study of the political reaction to the pamphlet in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The reactions of the white community and the state and local officials were outrage and subsequent repression; David Walker's pamphlet and the excitement it caused in the slaveholding South is an important chapter in African-American history. The goal of this thesis is to add to the present knowledge about this important document.
