- Description:
- Extensive field collections of slime molds have been made in the Fembank Science Center Forest over a period of three years. The Fembank Science tenter is a 70 acre tract of relatively un-disturbed forest in the city of Atlanta. This study is the first of its type for a single Georgia locality. The principal objective of the study was to add to the knowledge on the kinds and distribution of species of slime molds in the state. The Fembank Science Center Forest has been found to be a highly favorable habitat for the growth of myxonycetes. Seventy- three species, representing 26 genera, were identified in the study. Of these species 12 represent new records for the state. They are: Badhamia populina, Calonema aureum, Diderma niveum and D. globosum, Didymium ochroideum, Leocarpus fragilis, Lycogala conicum, Physarella oblonga, Physarum contextum, P. confertum, and P. vemum. Other species, previously reported, but not considered rare, were also found. They include Canatricha lurida, Leocarpus fragilis, and Perichaena microspOra. Other notable collections made during the study are an undetermined species of Oomuvia. or Oligonema, immature sporangia of a slime mold that resemble Craterium concinnum, three undetermined species of Didymium, and three undetermined species of Physarum. Of the 150 species of slime molds that have been reported frcm Georgia, more than half have been found in this single locality.
