- Description:
- Tissues used for this study were hearts of young chick embryos that had been cultivated from 7-10 days. The hanging drop double coverslip method was employed. Heart fragments were incubated for 2U and 1*8 hr. After that time, the cultures were fixed and stained for study. Outgrowth from the explants was observed in the control and experimental cultures; however, the extent of growth observed depended largely on the duration of growth and the concentration of thyroid extract in the medium. In view of these observations, it was concluded that thyroid extract in a concentration of 1:10,000 inhibited mitotic activity in chick heart cells, while thyroid extract of 1:10,000,000 had a stimulating effect over those of the other thyroid extract series.
