- Description:
- The Eastover Institute of Family Living in cooperation with other social service agencies in the Columbia, South Carolina area will provide a program of Family Living to the residents of the Eastover Community. The emphasis of the program will be placed on strengthening family life in the area. The project will include health, education, welfare and recreational programs for improving and enhancing total family participation; in meaningful and enriching experiences of growth and development. This project will also encourage community participation in an enriching and enlightening program of self-development, planning, and improvement. The families will gather together in small informal groups, called institutes, to learn and share experiences in meaningful ways. These institutes will be conducted by professionally trained individuals and center around Family Life Education and participation. Since the educational or training levels of many young people have exceeded those of the adults; many young people will be encouraged to share experiences in a meaningful manner. Most of these young people will be drawn from the vocational classes of the vocational and public schools. Resource individuals will be drawn from the social agencies in Columbia, South Carolina. The Eastover Community is an entity within itself, but has no planned social service programs except those in Columbia. Despite the fact that in twenty or thirty minutes residents can drive into the heart of Columbia; Eastover is not a residential suburb. It is in a sense, an entity in itself. Because there is no facility or outlet, many families seldom work or play together as a group in sharing and learning experiences. This project will provide opportunity for strengthening family unity and deepening appreciation for individuality. The town does not/experience serious social problems; however, since the American /6i sets the pace for the small town^ and since our society is becoming-more urban; this project is worthy of support as an enrichment program of prevention of further family disorganization.
