- Description:
- Culturally relevant pedagogy can be used to create a community of learners who support the academic progress of one another. The togetherness combined with academic and personal relevance of the content makes culturally relevant pedagogy ideal for African American students at the post-secondary level of education. The current study sought to determine whether culturally relevant pedagogy was related to academic success among undergraduate African American students enrolled in a synchronous online psychology class. The students completed instruments with objective and subjective questions. The quantitative results revealed that academic success is related to culturally relevant pedagogy. The qualitative results revealed that culturally relevant pedagogy increased students' desire to learn. In addition, creating a community of learners increased a sense of belongness in an online synchronous learning environment.
