- Description:
- This audio recording features a church service at Central United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The service proceedings include songs, prayers, the act of praise (led by Marvin S. Arrington, Sr. and Joseph Arrington), scripture readings, and a sermon delivered by Joseph E. Lowery (at 00:35:35). In his sermon, Lowery speaks about gratitude, specifically finding the things we can be thankful for and finding the strength to change the things we aren't thankful for. As part of his message, Lowery uses current events, such as happenings in South Africa and the Mid-East, to illustrate what we can and cannot be thankful for. The recording continues with church announcements, the singing of more hymns, recognition of visitors, and a baptism ceremony. There are a couple of references in the recording to Anwar Sadat's speech made that day (November 20, 1977) to the Knesset, Israel's legislature.
