- Description:
- This audio recording features two episodes of Martin Luther King Jr./SCLC Speaks, which is a collection of sermons and speeches from Martin Luther King, Jr., Joseph E. Lowery, and other prominent civil rights activists. In the first episode, Joseph E. Lowery gives the speech "Beating Gun Powder Into Soul Power" in which he addresses the crisis, causes, and effects of gun violence. Lowery identifies the main contributions to gun violence as the accessibility to guns, glorification of violence in the media, drugs, and the deterioration of families. Lowery charges the audience to care, share, support, and invest in one another and the Gun Buy-Back Program to help eliminate gun violence. Lowery delivered this speech in April 1993. At 00:28:28, the second episode (of which there is only a partial recording) features Joseph E. Lowery giving his State of the Movement address at the 37th Annual Southern Christian Leadership Conference Convention in August 1994. In his speech, Lowery addresses the topics of communism, colonialism, and democracy in the United States and in Africa.
