Obituary
De mp sey D. Purn e ll, Jr. was born in Macon, GA on June 10, 1920 to the parentage of the late Dempsey Purnell, Sr. and Willie Mae Purnell. He attended Ballard High School and Fort Valley State College. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Dempsey D. Purnell, Jr. passed away on April 19, 2002 at a local hospital after an extended illness.
He relocated to Brooklyn, NY in 1952 to pursue his career as a brick tnason of 25 years and was an active member of the Bricklayer and Allied Craftworkers Local # 34. He retired and moved back to Macon in 1977. He joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee Board.
Joe" D", affectionately nicknatned by his bowling buddies was a member of the National Bowling Association for 40 years. He was instrumental in establishing several leagues and tournaments. He was a member of the Lucky Strikes Mixed League and Pure Pleasure Bowling Club. Joe "D" was inducted in to the National Bowling Association's Empire City Senate Hall of Fame in New York City for tnaintaining a "190-200" average for 10 years or better and playing on many championship teams in the senate leagues.
Dempsey is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 43 years, Lillie Purnell; two sisters, Ruth P. Groce of Macon and Geneva P. Williams of Jamaica, NY; three daughters, Deborah Sitnmons of Boise, MD , Linda P. Bullard and Dorothy Hayes of Macon, GA; four grandchildren, James D. Copeland, Jr. of Queens, NY, Darryl Purnell, Dempsey Purnell IV, all of New Jersey and Tiffany Hardware of Macon, GA; six great-grandchildren, Brandon Copeland and Corey Copeland of Q ueens, NY, Tierra Purnell and Inesha Purnell, Ashanti Purnell of New Jersey and Dominic Pitts of Macon, GA; and many other relatives and friends.
