James Link Moffitt, Jr. was born in Durham, North Carolina, May 8, 1947 to the late James Link Moffitt, Sr. and Marie Clapp Moffitt.
James attended the East End Elementary School and graduated from the Hillside High School in the class of 1965. He later earned the Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee A.&l. State University in Nashville, Tennessee. While attending the University, James pledged the Rho Psi Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The friendships, the fun, and the dedicated spirit of which he developed in this historic Fraternal Organization, have been with him since his college days.
At an early age, James joined the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Bahama, North Carolina. He was also baptized in this church. His youth participations varied and they also included the Boy Scouts of America.
In June, 1967, James married the former Sandra M. Cooper of Macon, Georgia, and to this union, Mario Jamal and Jason Aahsaan were born.
While living in Atlanta, James and his family joined the Clifton United Methodist Church. His comprehensive approach to life and complete understanding of the human spirit added greatly to the Clifton Ministry. James's contact within the United Methodist Church throughout the city of Atlanta, spoke well for his ability to reach beyond his local church.
James began his professional scouting career as a District Scout Executive in the Atlanta Area Council in July, 1976, and served the East Atlanta District for ten years. From 1986 to 1990, he served as Senior Exploring Executive and was later promoted to the position of Field Director and Director of Urban Scouting. He was instrumental in developing and leading the "Operation First Class" Central City Scouting Program which has become a model for the Boy Scouts of America. Throughout James's career in the Boy Scouts, he exemplified a high quality of professionalism and a unique style in developing volunteers.
James was preceded in death by his father, Mr. James L. Moffitt, Sr. Today, James leaves to mourn his memory, his loving wife, Sandra C. Moffitt; two sons, Mario and Jason, Atlanta, Georgia; one grandson, Jason, II; mother, Dr. Marie C. Moffitt, Durham, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
James's philosophy and guide is expressed in his daily creed: A HUNDRED YEARS from now it will not matter what my hank account was, the sort ofhouse /lived in, or the kind ofcar I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life ofa boy.
