Fred D. Gaines, Jr., the son of Fred D. and Laura Moore Gaines, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, August 30, 1922. He attended Oglethorpe and E. A. Ware elementary schools, and Booker T. Washington and Carver Vocational schools. At Carver, he became skilled in welding and sheet metal work.
During World War II, he was assigned to the Norfolk Navy Yard as a welder and sheet metal worker. Shortly after VE Day, he returned to Atlanta and worked at Rich's Department Store for twelve years. Moving to New Jersey in 1957, he worked at Bamberger's Department Store for three years and the Port Realty Warehousing Company until his retirement in January, 1990. He returned to Atlanta for permanent living in June, 1991.
Fred became a member of Bethlehem Church of God Holiness at sixteen years of age, and maintained his love, loyalty, and devotion to Bethlehem until his death. During his years in New Jersey, he was a faithful and dedicated member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Orange where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir, yet retained his strong ties to Bethlehem in Atlanta.
After a long struggle with diabetes and its attendant debilitating illnesses, Fred passed on September 18, 1995. During the past five years, his niece, Jerri, often remarked, "Uncle Fred has three loves, Jerri, Ella Mae (his sister), and his church affiliations, but not necessarily in that order." Watching him in his determination to live against all odds during the past five years has been a re-affirmation of God for many who came in contact with him. He was a man of faith and belief whom God kept in his loving care until he became too weak and tired to carry on. He fought against the odds all his life, but found happiness and peace in his two churches and with his family and close friends.
Among his immediate survivors are his sisters, Ella Gaines Yates, Atlanta, Georgia, and Elizabeth Gaines Hardy, Los Angeles, California; niece, Jerri Sydnor Lee, LaGrange, Georgia; brother-in-law, Jack Hardy; niece and nephew, Lillian and Matthew Gaines, Los Angeles; numerous cousins and friends.
Freddie, as his family called him, was a loving son, brother, uncle, and unwavering friend. His quiet, peaceful and proud dignity will be missed as he in turn was loved, cherished, and respected by those who knew him.
