(Uniform Crime Report, Federal Bureau of Investigation)  Only 39 percent of all rape/sexual assault is reported to law enforcement. (National \nCenter for Victims of Crime)  One in six women has been the victim of an attempted rape or completed rape. \n(National Center for Victims of Crime)  Every two and one-half minutes someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. \n(National Center for Victims of Crime)  About 44% of rape victims are under age 18. 80% are under age 30. (National Center \nfor Victims of Crime)  82% of victims of rape were raped by someone they knew. (Department of Justice) \nGEORGIA FACTS  2,387 rapes were reported to Georgia law enforcement agencies in 2004. (Georgia \nBureau of Investigation)  Georgia's state-funded sexual assault programs served 3,969 victims who had been \nsexually assaulted or were victims of attempted sexual assault from October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005. Of those victims: \n 93% were female  45% were between the ages of 12 and 24  32% were African American  47% were Caucasian  84% knew their assailant  25% were assaulted in their home \nKEY PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUES  Victims are often blamed for the violent act perpetrated against them. This prevents \nmany victims from reporting the crime and getting the help they need.  There are a shortage of services for victims of sexual assault and rape, particularly in \nsouthern Georgia.  There are very few effective rehabilitation programs for offenders and even those who \nare convicted may re-offend after release from prison or probation. \nPUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS The Georgia Department of Human Resources funds 21 sexual assault programs statewide and trains law enforcement and medical staff to recognize victims of sexual harassment.
