FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nKings Bay Youth Job Fair Scheduled \nATLANTA  State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor's Kings Bay Career Center, the Kings Bay Employer Committee, and several other local organizations will sponsor the area's 13th annual youth job fair on Thursday, March 20. The event is designed to help youth 15-22 years old find jobs and career opportunities. \n\"This event marks the thirteenth year that the job fair has been held in the Kings Bay area,\" said Commissioner Thurmond. \"Last year, more than 300 students and other job seekers participated, and a number of employers were able to fill their job openings. I encourage the employers and youth in the Kings Bay area to participate again this year, so that this event will be just as successful as the other 12 job fairs have been.\" \nThe job fair will be held from 4-6:30 p.m. at the cafeteria at Camden County High School, located off Laurel Island Parkway, near I-95's Exit 6 in Kingsland. The internship program is designed to provide students at universities, colleges and technical colleges with practical work experience, an opportunity to earn school credit, and a chance to make up to $1,225 this summer. \n\"The internships have been highly successful in providing students with valuable experience in a real work environment,\" said Commissioner Thurmond. \"Interns work with the staff in the Georgia Department of Labor's career centers and vocational rehabilitation offices throughout the state, as well as in our central office in downtown Atlanta. Emphasis is placed on complementing the students' classroom learning with professional work experience, which will serve them very well as they plan and eventually begin their careers.\" \nInterns will work 25 hours per week for seven weeks between June 2 and August 2, and will be paid semimonthly. The program is open primarily to college sophomores, juniors and seniors presently enrolled in, or accepted to, a college, university, or technical college in the state, or a Georgia resident enrolled in a similar school in another state. \nSchool credits may be earned, but interns are responsible for making arrangements with their respective institutions to obtain the credit. Interns will be selected on the basis of their interests, areas of expertise that will be enhanced by their work with the labor department, maturity level, and access to one of the department's offices around the state. The January increase brings the rise over the past two months to a full percentage point. \n \nThe last time Georgia experienced a one-point increase in the state unemployment rate during the November to January time period was 16 years ago when the rate jumped from 4.3 percent in November of 1991 to 5.3 percent in January of 1992. \n \n\"I continue to be concerned by weakness in Georgia's labor market,\" said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. \"Clearly, the credit crisis and slumping housing sector are negatively impacting the job market. We're monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to respond.\" \n \nThe current state rate is two-tenths of one percent lower than the U.S. unadjusted rate of 5.4 percent. \n \nThe state's rate increased from December to January because the number of people unemployed increased by 27,044, while the number employed declined by 43,975. This increase in the rate was due mainly to across-the-board job losses in manufacturing, construction, trade, and services. \n \nFrom December to January, preliminary data show Georgia lost 53,300 payroll jobs, a 1.3 percent decline. The January increase brings the rise over the past two months to a full percentage point. \n \nThe last time Georgia experienced a one-point increase in the state unemployment rate during the November to January time period was 16 years ago when the rate jumped from 4.3 percent in November of 1991 to 5.3 percent in January of 1992. \n \n\"I continue to be concerned by weakness in Georgia's labor market,\" said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond. \"Clearly, the credit crisis and slumping housing sector are negatively impacting the job market.
