Description
Charles Longstreet Weltner (1927-1992) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Sally Hull (1887-1957) and Philip Weltner (1887-1981). Weltner practiced law in Atlanta before becoming a member of the 88th and 89th United States Congresses (1963-1967). He was elected to represent Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, which includes most of Atlanta. In 1967, Weltner became an associate justice of the Supreme Court in Georgia. In 1976, he served as a judge in the Superior Court of the Atlanta Judicial Circuit and he held this position until 1981 when he joined the Georgia Supreme Court.
The collection contains 40 minutes of color footage that documents Weltner's campaigns for Congress in 1962 and 1964. Included is footage used for campaign ads, images of a small political rally, and a recorded endorsement by Senator Edward Kennedy. None of the films in the collection contain an audio track, except the footage of Kennedy. Some of the footage used in campaign ads include shots of Atlanta that show Weltner walking through the Buttermilk Bottom neighborhood of Atlanta and a panoramic view of downtown atop the Merchandise Mart.
Also included in this collection is a 1954 film to promote the development of Atlanta, produced by Southeastern Films and commissioned by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. The collection includes a film created approximately in 1970 that also contains footage of Atlanta.
