Description
The Lexington Presbyterian Church records document the names of enslaved members of the church, and it is not unlikely that for some of the names provided it is the only existing record that these people ever lived. There are also records of prominent educators and politicians who resided in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, including the first chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court and co-founder of the University of Georgia School of Law Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1799-1867), and William Harris Crawford (1772-1834), U.S. Minister to France, Secretary of War, and Secretary of the Treasury, among others.
