Description:
Postcard (color, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) – The card features the Collar Badge and Shoulder Strap of the Royal Highlanders along with a depiction of their uniform. In 1729, the Government resolved that a number of loyal highlanders should become a regular domestic force of Scotland for duty in the mountain districts for which their habits and regular training made them better qualified than the soldiers from the lowlands. Six independent companies of Highlanders were formed. The independent companies wore the clan tartan (consisting of mostly black, blue, and green) of their respective commanders. From their somber appearance they were designated as the “Black Watch.” – No descriptive text on reverse. Postage required: Inland ½d. Foreign 1d. *Note: W & AK Johnson produced many postcards. This partnership was originally a printing business from 1825, run by the printer William Johnston and the Queen's Geographer, Alex Keith Johnston. William Johnston was a noted cartographer.
