United States, Georgia, Baldwin County, Milledgeville, 33.08014, -83.2321Curteich (Chicago, Ill.)1912/1925Postcard (color, linen textured, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, reprint) titled Milledgeville State Hospital, Center Building, Milledgeville, Ga. - Central State Hospital was Georgia's first psychiatric institution, eventually becoming the largest mental hospital in the United States. Central State was chartered by the legislature in 1837 for the treatment of illness and developmental disabilities. In continuous operation since accepting its first patient in December 1942, the hospital was known as the Georgia State Sanitarium and Milledgeville State Hospital. It is part of the National Register for Historic Districts. The Center Building was completed in 1858. It was renamed for Doctor Theophilus Powell, the hospital's superintendent from 1879 until 1907. Today, the hospital campus encompasses approximately 1,750 acres with 200 buildings in various states of decay. The first patient entered the facility in 1842. In 2010, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities announced that the hospital would be closed. No descriptive text on reverse.
