The city of Carrollton serves as the county seat of Carroll County and is one of Georgia's fastest growing industrial areas. Carrollton serves a regional population of more than 100,000 and is located an hours drive west of Atlanta. West Georgia College originated in 1 906 in an area of the state that is rich in Indian history (thus the selection of the school's mascot Braves). From the early beginnings in 1 906 of three small buildings, the college has grown to include more than 40 structures of learning, living, and recreation located on a 398-acre wooded campus. The physical facilities are valued at more than $ 88.5 million. Did you know You should carry your I.D. with you at all times? Studying would require more time and effort than it did in high school? There are other things to do at college besides study? Free on-campus activities are a great way to meet new people? Roommates can be good friends especially if you're a good friend? The library is more than a quiet place to read great for re- search, finding the latest magazine and making friends? Typing is practically a survival skill? There are other things to do at college besides party? Overloading your schedule, academically or otherwise, could be dangerous? Teachers want to answer your questions? Computers can be friendly? A Coke and a bag of chips are not the ideal dinner substitute? Buying a parking permit is cheaper than paying the three park- ing tickets you'll probably get the first week on campus if you don't buy a permit? A healthy snack, an apple or carrot sticks, for example, will keep you alert during an exam? The three golden rules: whites are washed in hot, darks in cold and permanent press in warm? Valuable things have a way of dis- appearing? A hair drier is not the only necessity of life don't forget quarters for the washer, an umbrella, aspirin, a dictionary, light bulbs, hangers, an alarm clock, calculator and a combination bottle and can opener? Cheering for the home team can be lots of fun even if you've never been interested in sports? There's another world off-campus worth exploring, especially if you're in a new city or town? ITS GRZZK TO MI What Is Rush? After Rush has been completed and bids have been extended, you will begin pledging/associating with the fraternity or sorority of your choice. It is important to come to Rush with an open mind and to give each chapter equal consideration. Be yourself Rush is a mutual selection process, so remember as you evaluate each chapter, they will evaluate you. Do not let others' opinions make the decision for you, but go with your own feelings, for the decision will affect the rest of your college years. You may wonder what qualities Greek organizations look for in an individual. Com- pleting a rush application will give you an idea of these qualities. Personality and interest are also important, but so is academics, since it is the main reason you are attending college. Always be sure to ask questions. If you have any questions pertaining to rush, financial matters, or social activities, ask someone to clear up these points for you! Another important point to consider is finances. Careful consideration should be given to your financial situation before making any obligations. Even though a rushec is not obligated to pledge/associate at the end of rush, we ask you to look carefully at Greek life as it is a way for you to meet the Greeks and to find out about the opportunities we have to offer. Like it . . . We love it! Go Greek! o 1 1 iL im phi fie psi sigh o-may-gah With . . . Active A fully initiated member of a fraternity or sorority. Alumni Those fraternity or sorority members who have graduated. Bid An invitation to become a pledge/associate member. Brother/Sister A term used by active members of a fraternity or sorority when referring to each other. Chapter The local group of a fraternity or sorority. Fraternity An organization with lifelong membership which uses Greek letters as a name. Women's fraternities are informally called sororities. Greek a member of a fraternity or sorority. IFC Interfraternity Council which governs the fraternities. Initiation The ritual which brings the pledge into full membership in the sorority/fraternity. Generally of some sacred nature as a formal ceremony. Lagacy A person whose father, mother, brother or sister is or was an active member of a fraternity or sorority. Pledge A person who is working to become an active member, (also called Associate Member) Quota The number of women/men that a sorority/fraternity may pledge. Ritual The traditional secret ceremonies of a fraternity or sorority. Rush The mutual process of membership selection consisting of scheduling functions in which active members and rushees become acquainted. Rushee A person who is registered for Rush. Panhellenic A council which governs sororities. Fraternities Sororities Becoming a member of a fraternity can be a great college experience. No other group at West Georgia Col- lege can offer you the brotherhood, interfraternal ca- maraderie, and social activities that a fraternity can. Fraternity members are highly visible on campus and that is due to the opportunity for campus and com- munity involvement that Greek life provides. Many lo- cal, regional, and national charities have benefitted from the thousands of dollars and man hours that are donated by our chapters. Joining a fraternity is a life commit- ment, Greek alumni always have a place to call home, and college men to call brothers. Alumni brothers are regularly informed of IFC and chapter events through financial support to the chapter. Presidents, senators, successful businessmen and celebrities have said that being Greek gave them the leadership qualities and con- fidence to succeed. Greek life has been beneficial to many people. They chose to become Greek because of the opportunity to meet and socialize with others who had similar inter- ests, to improve academic progress, and to develop last- ing friendships. Through IFC Rush, you have the op- portunity to make that same choice. Best of luck in finding the fraternity that's right for you! A sorority is a home away from home; a group of women who make your adjustment to college life a little easier. Sisterhood, beginning the day you become a pledge associate member, is a term that is difficult to explain yet is the basis of every sorority. Sisterhood results from sharing dreams, goals, laughter and tears. Sisterhood provides you with lasting friendships and memories that will enrich your college years and which you will cherish many years to follow. Along with sisterhood came other very important el- ements of sorority life, such as scholarship and lead- ership. Sorority women stress the importance of aca- demic achievement through various scholarship pro- grams. As a pledge you are encouraged to study with others in the same major so that the more experienced women can help if you have a problem. Chapter schol- arship awards are also part of this picture. Sorority members may accept membership on var- ious committees within the sorority as well as others on campus. Members are encouraged to assume lead- ership of committees by serving as chapter officers. So- rorities work together on charity projects as well as com- munity affairs to increase school spirit as well as in- crease student participation in all campus affairs. We can't stop there . . . other important elements of sorority life include sporting and social events. In- tramurals between sorortities provide friendly compe- tition among the women. Flag football, volleyball, soc- cer and basketball are just a few! Remember . . . anyone can play. Sororities are involved in social events such as formals, Greek Week and banquets just to get you started; but there are many more! I hope that you have begun to get an idea of what sorority life is all about. Rush Week will give you the opportunity to view all of the sororities . . . ask ques- tions! Whatever sorority you choose as your home, the friendships you form will be strong and lasting and will build memories you'll cherish a lifetime. 10 11 Greek Week 1992 12 13 14 15 u HOME AWAY FROM HOME" Carrollton, a growing suburban home of 1 8,000 people, is also the home-away-from-home for over 4,500 of West Georgia College's 7,500 students. You will be pleased to find how much a city of its size has to offer to college students and that you don't have to leave Carrollton to satisfy most of your off-campus needs. The students of West Georgia College and the people of Carrollton have traditionally enjoyed a mutually cooperative relationship. De- spite Carrollton's rapid growth, you will find that it still possesses a friendly, down-home atmosphere. The College urges you to treat Carrollton, your home-away-from home, as you would your own home . . . with respect for its laws, its property, and its people. Many students have utilized Carrolton's resources and gotten to know its people. Community involvement is a valuable experience in your total education, and the College encourages you to "discover Carrollton" while you are here.
