September 17th . . . nervous and excited . . . meeting new friends . . . saying good-by to old ones . . . unpacked and played the "where are you from" and, "do you know so and so?" game . . . attended special as- semblies, filled out necessary information, and followed im- portant diagrams. We learned to obey "quiet hour" rules . . . our lives be- came regulated by schedules . . . waking up for 8 : 00 classes and . . . being prompt for room check ... we became collegiate and put away high school year books and trinkets. . At fii-st we weie homesick, and wrote minute de- tails home to friend and family, but then our first quarter became a time of "firsts" . . . our first en- counter with tribe meetings . . . first college dance . . . first blind date and . . . our first event for "Rat Week." Girls wearing long antebellum style dresses . . . boys dressed in confederate grey . . . there was field day . . . rat races . . . relays . . . and the race for Mr. and Mrs. Rat . . . Rat parade, all rats, accompanied by a broom marching up town to be auctioned off to faculty mem- bers and town merchants . . . work day . . . rats divided into work groups to clean the campus . . . then . . . the long awaited Rat Court. General Sherman gave punishment to unreconstructed rats. ftm^ 10 As things began to settle, and became routine, we learned to love West Georgia . . . we felt the need to conform . . . acquired short skirts . . . knee socks, and sports jackets for classes. Home seemed a long way off . . . during the week . . . we studied long and hard . . . but we didn't neglect our coca-colas and bridge games . . . we joined the mass evacuation on Friday for the University of Georgia . . . Atlanta and other points of interest . . . hurrah for the five day week! We entered in all phases of college Life with a bang . . . decorated dorms for Homecoming . . . elected Homecoming Queen . . . and attended the big dance . . . pulled for friends in the Beauty Revue . . . entered into tribe competition . . . began studying for exams . . . and found ourselves welcome in Carrollton churches. In January . . . our campus was transformed by a week of snow . . . we took extra class cuts . . . had snow ball battles . . . and met in mass confusion in the student lounge. 11 ADMINISTRATION BUILDING Spring came to West Georgia with the begin- ning of our third quarter . . . grass was green . . . the flowers bloomed ... a mad rush for morning classes . . . girls began making regular visits to the roof of the M.M. Building . . . the baseball team practicing . . . we looked forward to the afternoons at Tanner's Beach and Lake Carroll . . . studying for exams was hard . . . we became sentimental as the seniors began saying "This is the last time we'll do this" . . . the Spring formal . . . the last formal many of them would attend at West Georgia. As days grew short, old friends were kissed good-by as we reserved places in our hearts for the departing Seniors and the incoming Freshmen . . . the old made way for the new . . . the final step was graduation, the day of ending . . . and . . . the beginning. BOYD President 20 l;' r Dr. Boyd looks at new men's dormitory to be erected in the near future. boyd, new president, Effects campus improvements A new President leads the activities of West Georgia stu- dents and faculty seeking to improve the college. Dr. James Emory Boyd assumed the presidency of West Georgia College last year after a distinguished career at the Georgia Institute of Technology which brought him national eminence in the field of science and research. Since 1957 he had been director of Georgia Tech's Engineering Experiment Station. While indelibly dedicated to the whole cause of educa- tion, Dr. Boyd is active in business, industrial, and other areas of endeavor. Mrs. Boyd is a native of Carrollton, the former Elizabeth Reynolds Cobb, and the two met and married here in 1934 while he was a member of the original faculty of West Georgia College. Since coming to West Georgia College, Dr. Boyd has charted a challenging program of progress for the institution as it seeks to expand and improve its academic offerings and physical fa- cilities. ^J^ .V' Dr. I. THE CHOIR The choir plays a major part in college life and functions, with tours, concerts, plays, and sing- ing at chapel, and graduation. THE M.A.A. The M.A.A., Men's Athletic Association, in- volves an intramural program designed to encour- age participation in intramural sports. Enthusiasm is high and competition is keen. Championship trophies are awarded and all-star games and played in each sport. This was sponsored by the M.A.A. and turned out to be the highlight of the season. Each tribe recruited ten girls to assist and turned the event into a gala affair.
