VARSITY Clyde Gordon Paul Rogers Denson Yates Ray Jones Bill Reed Guard Center Forward Forward Guard 69 BOYS' SPORTS VARSITY BASKETBALL The West Georgia Braves, playing their first full schedule since pre-war days, turned in one of their best seasons in 1946. The team gained third place in the State Tournament, placed Captain Paul Rog- ers and Rav Jones on the All-State team, and won a big majortv of its games against generally strong competition. The excellent record compiled is all the more re- markable when viewed in the light of material which greeted Coach Clark for the first practice session. Only Ray Jones, Clyde Gordon, and Den- son Yates had played enough ball previously to be considered varsity material. Prospects were bright- ened considerably, however, with the opening of the winter quarter when Rogers and Bill Reid entered college. Rogers had played at West Georgia in 1941 before entering the Army Air Forces and was voted the best junior college player that year in Georgia. He was quickly elected Captain and proved an inspiring leader throughout the season. Gordon and Reid developed into dependable guards, with Gordon a particularly fast man with a good eye for the basket. Reid's floor game and work on rebounds were great assets to the team. Jones and Yates at forward positions composed a high scoring pair with speed and aggressiveness. Rogers led the team in scoring with an average of about 18 points a game, with Jones averaging about 16 for the run- ner-up position. When at his best Yates could not be stopped. The team as a whole made a very favorable impression at the State tournament, both for playing ability and sportsmanship. INTRAMURALS Inasmuch as basketball has been the only inter- collegiate sport for men at West Georgia during 1945-1946, much emphasis has been placed on intra- mural activity. This has been carried out in con- junction with the physical education program and been successful. TOUCH-FOOTBALL The first intramural sport of the year was touch football. LJpon the arrival of Coach Clark in the middle of October teams were organized on the basis of classes and dormitories and much rivalry accompanied the fast and well-played games. The football league was disbanded at Thanksgiving at which time all participating players voted upon an All-Star team. The votes were tallied by Coach Clark and the following men were named for the first team: Clyde Gordon, Milton McLaney, Ed Johnson, Mac Griffith, Sherman Lindsey, Louis Adams, Bill Talley, England Beasley, Ray Jones, Wayne Gammon. Those making the second team were Jerry Stinson, Ray Miller, Wr. Mitchell, Riley Frost, Body Clup, Bob Anderson, Bob Davie, Clark Fincher, Chas. Smith, and Leonard McKibben. Those receiving honorable mention were Bill Mar- tin, Alonzo McCain, Dave Barrow, Tom Price, Jimmy Gentry, Clarence Salman, Willis Swint, Yin- cent Estes, Denson Yates, Warren Moses, and Paul Counts. SOCCER Following the football season, two weeks of soccer play were squeezed in before bad weather made outside games impossible. Though new to the game, most of the West Georgia boys took to it readily and enjoyed it after mastering fundamentals well enough to make scrimmages interesting. BASKETBALL Many of the fellows had played little or no bas- ketball before coming to West Georgia, but the long winter season gave them an opportunity to grasp the necessary fundamentals and many fine games were played. Several preliminary games were played on evenings when varsity matches were scheduled. The usual contests between classes and barracks were played with much zest and rivalry. Chosen for the All-Star teams bv the players and Coch Clark were: Nesbit, Davie, Frost, Swint, and Arrington. The second team was composed of Grif- fith, C. Smith, Sanders, Shankle, and McCain. Re- ceiving honorable mention were H. Smith, Miller, and Talley. SPRING SPORTS At the time when this is written spring sports are still in the future but they will consist of intramural competition in track, soft-ball, ball, baseball and tennis. 70 ^ 71 ^ LOUISE HENDRIX MARGARET MARTIN OLIVER LINDSEY SOPHOMORE These are our outstanding Sophomores who have been chosen by the student body .... they are known for being our best in everything .... known for their dependability and originality.
