Buford C. Arnold of Cartersville sent us the following as reported for The Times by J.A.R., June 14, I878: BILLOW BREVITIES The weather has been quite cool this week, owing we suppose to the hail storm of last Sunday. Mr. Nixon's cotton was badly injured by the hail Sunday, His cotton was very fine. There is lite in the old land yet. - Occasionally we hear of a wedding. - Suppose those who marry now, made good wheat crops. The Lowell Mason Society will meet at Mt. Zion, Turkey Creek, the fourth Sunday, at 9:00 a.m. We call for the yeas and nays on that fence question. We do this to find out which side 'L' is on. It is generally that he is on top. - Nobody felt any surprise when he stated that he did not own a foot of land, No, indeed, nobody had ever supposed that he owned any, or a cow either. A considerable storm of wind, rain and hail, fell last Sunday evening. The wind blew down wheat and oats, timber and fences. .Quite a large per cent of the wheat that was uncut was lost, while the riper oats were blown down and tangled about till it is impossible to save them. Corn and cotton in many places were badly injured by the hail, the former being split and bruised, and the latter beat down, and broken, much of it to entire ruin. The storm was more severe in some places than in others. Forms for Society membership, former issues of the Quarterly, the 1850 and I860 Census Records, and Focus of Research are found at the back of this issue. All other contributions to the Quarterly should be sent to Mrs. Clarice S. Cox, 1055 Farmers High Rd,, Carrollton, Ga 30117* See the announcement for the new book Carroll County Cemeteries on Page 38 and, as this is a limited printing, order yours today. We welcome your comments and suggestions as to how we can make the Quarterly a more helpful publication to you. -49- THE LINITY CHURCH Carroll County, Georgia The cemetery of the Linity Church is located about two miles southwest of Bowdon Junction on the road to Mt. Zion, Georgia, approximately sixty feet from the public road. The adjoining land is near the homesite of the late Elisha Gregory EarnesiTand his wife, Mary Lou Morrison Earnest. Before the Linity Church was built, the people of the Linity community held their meetings and worship services alternately in their homes. Thomas Richard Earnest gave one acre of land for the building of a church and for a community burial ground. The people of the community used logs to build their church to serve their community, its people, and others who cared to worship with them. Two services were held in the Linity Church on Sundays. Some members walked as far as two miles each way to church. The Church served the community from the 1850’s through the 1870’s. Some of the members were the Earnests, Lamberts, Johnsons, Akins, and Phillips. Some of the older members of the Earnest families lived then about onefourth mile from the U. S. Post Office at Holly, Georgia. The community and a church were later called Holly Springs, about one mile north of Bowdon Junction, Georgia. During the depression days before and after the Civil War, the people in this area, and other areas, were in need of many necessities, especially clothing and shoes. In order to save their shoes for "Sunday Wear," they walked barefoot to church, then they put on their "Sunday" shoes when they came near the church. The Earnest family later were fortunate to own a two-wheel oxcart. Some of the Linity Church members later joined the Bowdon Junction Harmony Protestant Church. r The people of this community loved one another and had many occasions to get together. Church services were their main "get-togetherness;" however, other pleasures were quilting, log-rollings, and corn shuckings. (This Church was located at GMD 1240, Land Lot 247 of the 10th Land District of Georgia.) I was told he once sold the family Bible to a passerby for a dollar! I'm sure that it broke my great-grandmother's heart but times were tough and that dollar bought many needed items! BIRD/BYRD James BIRD/BYRD was born in Carroll County I believe, although there is a rumor the family migrated from one of the Carolinas. He is believed to be almost a full-blooded (Cherokee?) Indian and was born.about 1829* He died 13 March 1909* His wife, Ellen BROWN, was also believed to be part Indian and-she was a postmistress and school teacher. Family history has it that she was the first person to ever have a horse-drawn funeral since it was usually by mule. She was born 4 Oct 1844 in Carroll (?) Jasper died 16 June 1932, and is buried in the Hall Cemetery in Tifton, Ga. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my great-grandmother, Minnie P. (The preceding was taken from "Merrell, and Allied Families," by May Merrell Emory, which was loaned to the Society by Miriam Merrell.) HENSONS OF CARROLL CO,, GA. Lazarus Henson (Hinson), R.W. Soldier, was born in Stafford Co., Va., in 1752. Before the Revolution, he was in Chatham Co., N.C., and after the war was in S.C., then to Franklin Co,, Ga., in the early 1800's, and to Carroll Co., Ga., by I830, He had a large family, and among the males were: Lazarus Jr., Aaron, Henry, and William. An interesting family story that fits Lazarus is that seven Henson brothers and one sister came to N.C. from Va. before the Rev. War, all entered service and survived, and after the war married seven sisters — "Holder" women. Of the seven brothers, one was named William, another Edmund, and a third was likely our Lazarus, but at this time we have no proof. Aaron Henson, son of Lazarus, was born in N.C., and in 1812 he and his wife Mary had a son named Orren A., probably Orren Austin. Orren may have had a brother or two, but to date we have not been able to identify one. We do know that Orren had five sisters, perhaps six, and we do know who at least the five were: Rittes (or Ritter) Henson, who married Bird Franklin. Rebecca Henson, who married Leonard Fulbright, Susan Henson, who married Arthur Whisenhunt. Elizabeth Henson, who married Merrell Franklin. Emily Henson, who married Thomas Rabun. Aaron Henson died in Carroll County in 1835» and his son Orren A. was appointed administrator of his estate. One William Henson was made an appraiser of the property, but his exact relationship was unknown -- we think perhaps a brother of Aaron. Mary, the widow, had to buy back some of her household property at the sale, and her father-in-law, Lazarus, bought a few odd items. About this time Orren A. acquired a 40-acre lot in Paulding County, and his mother and sisters moved there with him, along with his grand¬ father, Lazarus. One Lazarus Henson joined the Tallapoosa Primitive Baptist Church in Carroll County in 1834, and he transferred out by letter in 1837. We don't know if it was Lazarus Jr. or Sr., but we do know that Lazarus Sr. died in Paulding County in 1839, according to his pension record. Orren A. Henson, the son of Aaron, was listed on the 1840 Paulding census, and sometime after that he moved back to Carroll County, just north of Temple, Ga. About this time he became a Justice of the Peace, and performed many marriages in and around Carroll County. In 1846 he married Martha Cartwright, the daughter of his neighbor, Wilson Cart¬ wright. Wilson had also arrived in Carroll County around 1830. In 1847 one Henry Henson married Sarah Stewart in Carroll County, but was Henry an uncle of Orren*s, or a cousin? Before they left Carroll County after the war, Orren and Martha had seven children, Aaron Wilson, Mary E., Martha Jane, Austin Henry, William Jeff., Joseph E., Mirem Rebecca, Sally H., and after arriving in Texas, two more -- James A. and Ida Victoria. Also, before leaving Georgia, Orren donated two acres of land to the Methodist Church in Temple for a church-site and graveyard. The graveyard is still in use. His father-in-law, Wilson Cartwright, was on the Church board at the time There are a few other Hensons in Carroll County in those early days that we have as yet been unable to connect with the family, although we feel reasonably sure that they are related, such as: 1830 William, on the census« I832 Jesse -- defaulted on a poll tax. I832 William — paid 2 poll taxes. I836 William, buys lot 119-D-10. 1840 William, buys lot 113-D-ll. 1842 John, pays one poll tax. 1842 Reuben, pays poll tax and tax on l|- lots. Another Henson researcher says that a Walter Hanson who was in Carroll County at about this same time ties in with this Henson group, going back to a Robert Hinson in Stafford Co., Va., around 1750* When Orren and Martha arrived in Texas, they settled in a town called Perryville, which is on the borderline of Wood and Upshur Counties The descendants of Orren and Martha have formed a small family associa¬ tion, and for the last nine years have been having a family reunion in Gilmer, Texas, on the first Saturday and Sunday of November, Visitors are welcome, of course, and we would also welcome any additional bits of information about the family, relationships, whatever. To date, we have contacted descendants of three of Aaron’s daughters, and would like to find more. Any help would be appreciated, A family book is being planned for later this year, but it will be mostly about the descendants of Orren and Martha Cartwright Henson, with one chapter about the earlier ones. If anyone can help, please contact this writer. J. Thii Henson gave a. Trustee the Church (just north of Temple) he was a bondsman on a Dodson and a Courtney is a bit unusual in that at that time he was quite a young man, but still must have had enough property or cash to satisfy the bond requirements, At this time we it narrowed down to e 1784. Some of Wilson’s children moved to Texas about the time the are not positive about Wilson’s parents, but have ther a William or Joseph Cartwright, b. in N,C „ in War settling in.the same N.C. ca„ 1812, Another brother, His son, they are buried Orren Henson family came here after the Civil part of East Texas as the Hensons. Wilson had a brother, Jacob Lawson Cartwright, b. and who married Mary Russell jin Carroll County in 1832. Joseph, married Eliza Dane, and Joseph died in the war. Alexander Sanford Cartwright married Susan E. West, and in the Hickory Level area of Carroll County. Wilson also probably had a brother named Lemuel, and a sister Ann, and one other sister Elizabeth, but of this we have no proof. We would welcome any information on the Cartwright family, ancestors or descendants. We feel sure Wilson is buried in the Temple Cemetery, but there is no marker for him there or for his wife Susan. News was received by Mayor Coleman this week that there were several cases of smallpox in Griffin. As Carrollton is in direct communication with that city by rail, this information created no little commotion here. Tuesday morning a special meeting of the council was held and it was decided that quarantine should be declared against Griffin» Since then Marshalls Hamilton and Cheney have been meeting the trains at Benson8s crossing, coming from Griffin, to ascertain if any person was on board from the infected city. There has also been a close scrutiny of all strangers entering the town, especially persuasion, as it is mostly through them that this loathsome disease is spread. And in herself complete 5 * so we’d to know Her own, that what she wills to do or say -- Milton. It may be strange, but it seems that the most interesting people in and about Tallapoosa are women, -- old women at that; and all of them are either widows or old maids. Granny Little is one of the widows. She is eighty-four years old. Until she was an old woman her life was mainly connected with gold-mining. Her father, a man named Ed Holland, was a gold-hunter. He came to Villa Rica, in Carroll county when he was a young man, in the early days of the gold fever there. At that time people from all parts of the world were to be found in Villa Rica, hunting and digging for gold. Most of them stayed there until the great rush of gold-diggers to California in 1849. Granny Little was born in Villa Rica in 1833* In 1847 the family moved to the mine three miles south of Tallapoosa, Mr. Holland having purchased the property for three hundred dollars. There he worked for a number of years using slave labor, and the crude methods of those days. In 1849 one of the negroes discovered one of the most extensive "pockets" ever known. In three days and nights, working incessantly, more than $45,000 of gold was taken out. The gold was hauled to the mint at Dahlonega, in a wagon, by a man named Walton, who lived below Tallapoosa in what is still called the Walton settlement. Granny Little frequently went along on these trips, and many times went down to the shaft and helped her father generally in his mining business, from the time she was seven years old. She was sent to-school at an Academy out toward the river from Tallapoosa, taught by Professor Martin Smith and his mother.' But when she was only sixteen years old, and just two weeks before she graduated, "like a little fool," as she expressed it, she married. In the early sixties she and her husband moved to Texas and wer engaged in farming for several years. During the Civil War they lived in Louisiana, and for nearly tv years several Fereral officers stayed at her home. She says they we as good to her as if she had been related to them, paying well for everything they used, and taking good care of her, her children, and everything on the place. (German papers please copy!) After the war her husband’s health failed and they came back tc Georgia. Mr. Little soon died. None of the children are living and some of her grandchildren are dead, though she still has a number wb live in different parts of the country. Her father had many losses in business, but he saved enough out the earnings of the mine to found the Atlanta National Bank. He was first president and continued so for many years. Granny Little has a picture of him, a copy of which was on the bills issued by the bank. Granny Little reads the paper a pair of old-fashioned spectacles engrave every day without glasses. She u when she was twenty-five years ol but happened to break them and has never had another pair, nor neede another pair since that time. For many years her life has been very quiet. She is always rea to help her friends and has many of them. She still has enough to d keep her hands and mind busy\ but no doubt her thoughts often go bac the stirninrG’ scenes of her early life.
