I had the misfortune of breaking an ankle last June, from which I have had a very slow recovery. Jan Bell, editor of our Carroll County Genealogical Quarterly, is to be commended for a job well done in getting out the summer issue of our quarterly. I greatly appreciate her taking care of the writing of the president's letter. I am very pleased to announce that of this date, this society has one hundred and thirteen members. It is interesting to note that at the beginning of this year we had less that twenty members. We welcome all these new members to our society, and urge each of you to attend our meetings .if at all possible. To you out-of-town members, we would be gMd to have you to att¬ end our meetings if you ever pass this way. Due to the rapid growth of this society, we have been having "growing pains", in that it has been very hard to keep pace with our ever expanding membership list. There is a possibility that some members did not get their quarterlies on time, or got ;the wrong issue, for which we apologize. For any correspond¬ ence about these matters, please contact Mrs. Bernard (Nell) Yates, 818 Tyus Rd., Bowdon, Ga. 30108. Mrs. Yates is now in charge of all memberships and mailing. I feel that our society has had a very sucessful year. Besides the overwhelming growth of our membership, we have had very good monthly meetings. Our attendance has been above average and our programs have been just great. We have seen two proj¬ ects completed, namely the program which was instrumental in getting many of the church records of the county placed on microfilm at the State Archives and some have also been given to the West Georgia Regional Library for their microfilm dep¬ artment. Also, all the county tax digests that have survived for the years l84l through 187^» are back at the Carroll County Courthouse, after being restored and microfilmed at the State Archives, in Atlanta. I know each of you join me in looking forward to an even better year, next year. In the meantime, HAPPY HUNTING! Your president, •1 i f 54 TEE CHAPPELL FAMILY For the following information, I am indebted to Mrs. C.R. Allen, 1500 Everglades Drive, Tyler, Texas 75701, who shared her research on the Chappell family most generously with me. The very first Chappell family of our line that we have records of lived in Cabarrus County, N.C. The name of this first Chappell ancestor is not known for sure but is believed to be John Chappell because of deeds found there prior to 1800. I believe that this John Chappell was the father of tvo sons, Jesse and Allen, and he probably had other children also, whose names are unknown to us. On March 16, 1789, Jesse F. Chappell was bom in North Carolina. It is believe that Jesse is the older brother of Allen Chappell, from vfacm my family is descended. Allen Chappell was bom nine years after Jesse in the year 1798, also in North Carolina. Both Jesse and Allen grew to young manhood in this state and later married vonen who were also natives of North Carolina. In September of 1813, Jesse F. Chappell married Sally Purvians in Cabarrus County, N.C. On January 11, 1820, Allen Chappell married Patsey Martha Purviance, also in Cabarrus County, N.C. (Note: It is my opinion that there is a possibility that these two young ladies were sisters, or otherwise related. The spelling of Purvians and Purviance is quite similar and one or the other could have easily been misspelled by the clerk recording the marriage. Another interesting fact is that,in my own family, these names had been passed down mostly by ward of mouth and these names had been ronembered as Sally "Vines” and Patsey Martha "Vines.") Many years later, Allen and Patsey Martha Chappell had a daughter whom they called "Vina", which could be a nickname for Purviance if she were given her mother's maiden name. Sally Purvians had been bom in 1791 and Patsey Martha Purviance'had been bom in 1798. At some point in time, Jesse and Allen Chappell appear in records in Mecklenburg, N.C. Jesse and Sally Chappell lived in North Carolina during the early years of their married life, for the first five of their children are on record as having been bom there. G.D. Henderson Chappell, bom in 1815 was their first son. Four daughters followed: Matilda on November 16, 1816; Mahalia in 1818; Malina on July 8, 1822; and Eliza Ann on November 26, 1824. Shortly after their marriage, Allen Chappell and his new bride, called Martha, must have joined the many families Who were moving from North Carolina to Georgia to settle on the newly acquired lands which had been ceded by the Indians. The 1820 Ga. Census recorded Allen and Martha Chappell living in Greene County, Ga. Living with them in their household were two adult females (ages between 26~45). This could have possibly been a mother and a sister who had migrated with them to Ga. By 1827, Jesse and Sally Chappell had moved their family to Georgia also, for their second son, James L.G. Chappell, was bom in that state on January 6, 1827. Then there followed the birth of the third son, and seventh child, Sandy Allen Chappell on December 11, 1830. (During the War Between the States, Sandy Allen Chappell was a member of the Holloway Grays and was killed at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 20, 1862.) Jesse and Sally Chappell settled in an area of Georgia that later became Monroe County (1821). Later on, Lamar County was carved out of Monroe County (1920) and there is still an area there known as Chappell’s Mill. In 1827, Allen Chappell won a parcel of land in the 1827 Land Lottery of Troup County, Ga. However, later records show that by 1828, he had sold this land. In 1830, Allen and Martha Chappell were living in Upson County, Ga. with their four year old son, Crosby Dawson Chappell, who had been bom in 1826. The two female adults were still living with them, according to the census taken that year. By 1840, Allen and Martha Chappell had several more children and they had moved to Heard County, Ga. A daughter, Martha, had been bom in 1832; a daughter Vina in 1837; and another son, Allen H. Chappell in 1838. The name and age of the other daughter is not known. 55 By 1850, Allen and Martha Chappell had moved their family to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. By 1860, the census showed that their next-door neighbors were Jesse Chappell kid his second wife, Melinda Wise Chappell. (I have seen their marriage certificate on record in Carroll County marriage books.) The daughter Vina was still living with her parents, Allen and Martha, in 1860 and so were what appear to be several grandchildren: Mary Chappell, age 5; Moses Chappell, age 3; John Floyd, age 8; Mary Floyd, age 6; and Susan Floyd, age 4. This was a lively household for Allen and Martha Chappell who,by this time, were 62 years old. By 1870, Allen Chappell had moved his family back to Heard County, Ga. and it is here that he lived the remainder of his life. The location of his grave is not known. My family was descended from Allen Chappell through his oldest son, Crosby Dawson Chappell, bom in 1826. In the 1850 census of Georgia, Crosby Chappell was living in Coweta County, Ga. Coweta County joins the eastern part of Heard County and also the southeastern part of Carroll County. In 1850, Crosby Chappell was 24 years old and his wife, Martha E. Jones Chappell, was also 24. At this time, they had a five-year-old son, James M. Chappell, and a ten-month-old daughter, Sarah. A thirty-year-old white female by the name of Lizean Kelley was also living with them. Between the years before the next census was taken, three more children were bom to Crosby and Martha Chappell: Mary in 1852; John in 1859; and Thomas in 1860. By 1860, Crosby Chappell had moved his family to Tallapoosa County, Ala. where he was living near his parents. But by 1870, Crosby Chappell had moved his family to Villa Rica in Carroll County, Ga. Four more children had been bom: June in 1862; Dora in 1864; Ella in 1866; and Allen Dawson Chappell in 1870. My family was descended from Crosby Dawson Chappell through his youngest son, * Allen Dawson Chappell, bom in 1870. Like the Chappell men before him, Allen Dawson Chappell grew.up to become a farmer, but he was also a carpenter, too. On Christmas Day of 1890, he married Eldorado "Rada" Chambers, who was the daughter of James A. Chambers and Martha A. Fowler Chambers of Carroll County, Ga. (Buried at Stripling Chapel Church, Carroll Co., Ga.) The oldest child of Allen Dawson Chappell and Eldorado Chambers Chappell was my grandmother, Martha Maude Chappell, bom on November 25, 1891. Six more children were bom unto than: Byrd Morton Chappell, bom on November 23, 1893; Carl Benjamin Chappell, bom July 25, 1897; Alma Pauline Chappell, bom July 5, 1900; Twin Sons: Hoke and Smith Chappell (named for Governor Hoke Smith of Georgia) , bom April 16, 1907; and Mary Louise Chappell, bom May 4, 1909. Rada Chambers Chappell (bom March 2, 1874) died of typhoid fever on August 23, 1914. She is buried in an unmarked grave alongside her parents at Stripling Chapel Church in Carroll County, Ga. Allen Dawson Chappell (bom December 11, 1870) died on October 15, 1923 and was buried at Milledgeville, Georgia. I would be interested in locating his grave there if anyone might have this Information. For those of you who might be more interested in the descendants of Jesse Chappell, I would refer you to LAMAR COUNTY HISTORY (GEORGIA) by Mrs. Augusta Lambdin, 1932 . Also, I might mention that Mrs. C.R. Allen of Tyler, Texas, who is largely responsible for the research in this article, is a descendant of James M. Chappell, the older brother of Allen Dawson Chappell. Mr. and Mrs. Allen visited in Carroll County in the Fall of 1973 and collected much information from Family Bibles, cemeteries, and from interviews with relatives. I have typed copies of this information which I will be glad to share. Contributed by Jan Robinson Bell Married on the 28th of December, 1871, at the residence of J.R. Handley, by D.J. Moore, Esq. ACTS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA PASSED IN MILLEDGEVILLE AT AN ANNUAL SESSION IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER, 1836 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Whereas, all sections of the country are entitled to an equal participation of the advantages of the Government—and whereas, Stages when regularly kept up, are of singular service to the country through which they pass, as well as to the comnunity in general—and whereai, the Cherokee country is rapidly advancing in wealth and population—and whereas, said country is almost entirely deprived of the benefits which flow from stages and stage routes—and whereas, a route from Carrollton to Spring Place, by way of Rome, Cassville, and New Echota, and a route fran Decatur to Cassville, by way of Marietta, would be of great public utility, as well as to the advantage of the Cherokee country. Be it therefore resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Georgia in General Assemby met, that our Senators in the Congress of the United States and our Representatives, be requested to use their best endeavors to have a weekly line of Stages established fran Carrollton to Spring Place by the way of Rome, Cassville, and New Echota, and fran Decatur to Cassville, by way of Marietta. And be it further resolved, That his Excellency the Governor, be requested to transmit a copy of this preamble and resolutions to each of our Senators and Representatives in Congress. In the House of Representatives, agreed to, 23rd Dec. 1836. Attest—Joseph Sturgis, Clerk Joseph Day Speaker of the House of Representatives In Senate, concurred in, 24th Dec. 1836 Robert M. GRANDMA SHIRLEY, CENTENARIAN The Bulletin herewith presents a photo of Mrs. Annie E. Shirley, who celebrated her one hundredth birthday last Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Woodward, five miles west of Bowdon, and just over the line in Alabama. Mrs. Shirley will be seen spinning upon an old fashioned spinning wheel which had been in the family 150 years. She is yet quite active and can get about as well as most women about the age of sixty. Something over a year ago, Mrs. Shirley was taken real sick, and it was remarked by someone sitting up w/ith her, that they wondered if she would live to be a hundred years old, and she spoke up and said yes, she wasn't ready to give up yet. This being one of the few century mark birthdays, our photographer, Mr. J.S. Reese, was on hand and added to the occasion by taking pictures of the many people present. She was formerly Annie Elizabeth Milton, bom in Dorlington District, S.C. on November 15, 1813, and married at the age of twenty-five. Her husband died in 1847, but to them were bom three children, three sons and a daughter. The two sons, John and Robert Shirley, served in the Civil War, being killed in the battles around Richmond. Judge Thomson, who knew then during the war, speaks of them as gallant soldiers and were a credit to the Southern cause. QUERY SLIP Dear Folks, As the President of our Society has noted in her letter this month, we are indeed beginning to suffer some "growing pains!" This is especially evident to me in the area of queries, which has become a most involved tangle of paperwork! I am receiving queries which are written on everything from grocery lists to kleenex! Also, some queries are buried and lost within pages of very long letters. And, too, ;I have-received many queries which have no name and address of to whom a reply should be written. Help! I would like very much to try to do a better job with the queries in the coming year, but I will need your assistance to do so. Please try to keep your queries to a maximum of 50 words—however, I will consider longer queries as space allows. For non-members, the cost of a query is $1.00 for the first fifty words and $2.00 for 50-100 words. Queries for members of our genealogical society are free. It is not required that queries be typed, but please do print them legibly. It is not imperative that a query be filled in on this form, but I would like to request that it be written on a separate t page from any other correspondence with the word "QUERY" written boldly at the top ofthe page. Please be very sure that you write the date on which you are waiting your query and also your name and address. I do regret that I am unable to answer the mail which I am receiving from all over the country, tut please know that I wall attend to your queries by way of this publication if they are sent to me in a neat and orderly fashion. Remember that a letter may become separated from its envelope so please do put your return address on every page of your letters. Also, I would like to request that letters longer than one page be stapled together. Thanks so much! J.B. 74 QUERIES Who were the parents ol Hiram Wesley Smith (6. June 25, 1861-d.
