He says that he prefers church songs but he also likes secular songs. He repeats the lyrics to a secular song that begins "Down in the Wildwood." When he was a child his Aunt Jane sang a song called "Foolish Love" asked him to accompany him on guitar. Barnes is critical about churchgoers' opposition to secular songs and to owning a television. He describes singing church songs when he was a child, writing songs for his gospel group, and personalizing songs that were written by someone else. He prefers playing old-time music to contemporary music because it communicates more to the audience, and people are familiar with it.
