The diary describes Hazel Beamer's life in New York City where she attended college and performed as a dancer before she married and took the surname of Cutler. Hazel Beamer spends most of her days rehearsing and performing in the Howard Brothers show "Sky High" and spending time with her most serious boyfriend George (George Schleich), who often dines with her, and escorts her home after each performance. On one occasion, Hazel Beamer gets very angry at Schleich for standing her up during a snowstorm. She is also mad at the stage director of "Sky High," named "Mr. Felix," for placing her in a chorus of dancers. According to Hazel Beamer, the show "Sky High" traveled to Brooklyn, New York, Newark, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. before opening in New York City. Hazel Beamer describes the thrill of the opening night of "Sky High." She has a conversation with George Schleich about her Thomasville, Georgia boyfriend "Paul" (Paul Searcy) and promises not to kiss Paul Searcy when she goes back to Thomasville. She mentions one of her featured performances in "Sky High," the "Dipper Dance." She gets the understudy role of the leading lady of "Sky High." She takes horseback riding lessons. She goes on several dates with another suitor, "Lester." She speaks to a man named Frank McCoy about getting a picture back from painter and stage designer Ben Ali Haggin, III (1882-1951). She recalls receiving a Swiss handkerchief as a gift from "Mr. J. J." (producer Jacob J. Shubert). She plays tennis, goes canoeing, and plays golf with George Schleich. She declines the opportunity to travel on the road with "Sky High" after it completes its run in New York City. She mentions helping "Dearie" and "Uncle Boudi" look for a home in Long Beach, New York. Illustrator, portrait artist, and muralist Dora Wheeler Keith (1856-1940) (referred to as "Dearie" in the diary) and her husband, New York lawyer and reformer Boudinot Keith (1859-1925) (referred to as "Uncle Boudi" in the diary) were Hazel Beamer's hosts and guardians in New York City. Hazel Beamer takes singing lessons. She meets with casting director "Mr. Leftwitch" whom she describes as "next in power" to Jacob J. Shubert to discuss work after "Sky High." Her mother, Eva Elizabeth "Bessie" Baker Beamer (1864-1955), comes to visit New York City. Hazel Beamer remarks that the last day of "Sky High" is August 29, 1925. Shortly after her last day with "Sky High," she begins rehearsals with an unnamed production that travels to Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Buffalo, New York, New Haven, Connecticut, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Newark, New Jersey. After this show finishes touring, Hazel Beamer visits Thomasville, Georgia, where her Thomasville boyfriend Paul Searcy and "Ray" greet her at the train station. She is conflicted with feelings for Paul Searcy and her New York boyfriend, George Schleich. While in Thomasville, she dates Paul Searcy, "Ray," and a man named Bill Langley. She visits friends and family and takes several small trips to Tallahassee, Florida, to Valdosta, Georgia, and Wakulla Springs, Florida. She begins to make arrangements to purchase a house in Thomasville, and consults Dora Wheeler Keith for advice.</dc:description><dc:format>application/pdf</dc:format><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Cutler, Hazel Beamer, 1901-1980--Diaries</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cutler, Hazel Beamer, 1901-1980--Friends and associates</dc:subject><dc:subject>Beamer, Bessie Baker, 1864-1955</dc:subject><dc:subject>Keith, Boudinot, 1859-1925</dc:subject><dc:subject>Keith, Dora Wheeler, 1856-1940</dc:subject><dc:subject>Shubert, Jacob J., 1878?-1963</dc:subject><dc:subject>Haggin, Ben Ali, 1882-1951</dc:subject><dc:subject>Artists--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Musical theater producers and directors--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Dancers--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Howard, Eugene</dc:subject><dc:subject>Howard, Willie, 1886-1949</dc:subject><dc:subject>Comedians--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Man-woman relationships--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Man-woman relationships--Georgia--Thomasville</dc:subject><dc:subject>New York (N.Y.)--History</dc:subject><dc:subject>Thomasville (Ga.)--History</dc:subject><dc:subject>New York (N.Y.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>Brooklyn (New York, N.Y.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>Newark (N.J.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>Washington (D.C.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>Pittsburgh (Pa.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>Buffalo (N.Y.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>New Haven (Conn.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>Atlantic City (N.J.)--Description and travel</dc:subject><dc:subject>Dance--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Canoes and canoeing--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Tennis--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Golf--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:title>Hazel Beamer Cutler diary, 1925 January 18-1926 June 28</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
