The diary describes Hazel Beamer's life in New York City where she attended college and performed as a dancer before she married and took the surname of Cutler. The diary begins with her noting that she is in love with “George” (George Schleich). She reveals this to illustrator, portrait artist, and muralist Dora Wheeler Keith (1856-1940), whom she refers to as “Dearie.” Dora Wheeler Keith and her husband, New York lawyer and reformer Boudinot Keith (1859-1925), whom Beamer refers to as “Uncle Boudi,” were Beamer's hosts and guardians in New York. Beamer considers marriage to George Schleich and also contemplates becoming a Christian Scientist. She continues to date other boys, including “Bob,” and “Lester,” though these dates are far less serious. She describes attending a party for the Army-Navy football game, and a dinner held by portrait painter and stage designer Ben Ali Haggin, III (1882-1951). Beamer also recalls meeting and auditioning with Broadway producer and choreographer Allan K. Foster, though these opportunities did not appear to result in any work. She writes about taking the train to Thomasville, Georgia for the Christmas holidays. Upon arrival, she describes a greeting by her mother and aunts, and her Thomasville boyfriend "Paul" (Paul Searcy). She happily describes meeting with old friends and family in Thomasville, going on numerous dates with Paul Searcy, traveling to Tallahassee, Florida, and being upset when he broke dates with her. Beamer returns to New York City and spends most of her time going to school, going out with friends and suitors, most frequently George Schleich.
